You do not need to have been in a crash for this to count. If you are arranging your life around avoiding certain roads, that is reason enough. No diagnosis or referral needed.

Driving anxiety is a nervous system problem, not a character flaw.

It is not about confidence or being a bad driver. Your body has learned to treat the road as a threat, and that learning can be worked with. Here is what that looks like together.

Making sense of the panic

Understanding what your body is doing in the car, why it escalates so fast, and what actually settles it. Once it stops feeling random, it stops feeling so frightening.

A gradual return, on your terms

Small, paced steps you choose yourself, from a quiet street to a busier road to the on-ramp. Nobody is putting you on the 401 before you are ready.

If it began with a collision

When the fear traces back to a crash, we use EMDR and trauma-informed therapy to help that memory settle, so the road stops replaying it for you. Melissa is also trained in the Flash Technique, an EMDRIA-approved addition to EMDR that lowers the intensity of the accident memory before we process it, without you having to relive or retell it.

What we can work with

Driving anxiety takes a few recognisable shapes. Whichever is yours, the approach is the same: understand what your body is doing, then take the road back one step at a time.

Panic that comes out of nowhere

Racing heart, shaking hands, needing to pull over. We work on what your body is doing in the car, why it escalates so fast, and what actually settles it.

Highways, bridges and left turns

Fine on side streets, frozen at the on-ramp. Small, paced steps you choose, one road type at a time.

Avoiding driving altogether

Routes planned around the fear, a licence that goes unused. We shrink the avoidance gradually, without anyone pushing.

Dread before you even get in

Anticipatory anxiety that starts the night before a drive. We work on the thoughts and the body together, because they feed each other.

A passenger who cannot relax

Bracing and back-seat driving when someone else is at the wheel. Same nervous system, same approach.

If it began with a crash

Fear that traces back to a collision. EMDR and trauma-informed therapy help that memory settle, so the road stops carrying it.

Nobody is putting you on the highway before you are ready. You choose every step, and you can take one back at any time.

Psychological assessment and driving evaluation assessments

Alongside therapy, psychological assessment of driving anxiety and avoidance is arranged through our psychologist, so what is happening is set out clearly and treatment can start from the right place.

What it looks at

Panic and bracing behind the wheel. Avoiding the highway, the route, or driving altogether. How far the avoidance has spread into work and daily life, and the anxiety, sleep and mood that sit underneath it.

What you get

A written report setting out what has changed, what it means for daily life, work and driving, and what treatment is recommended, written so your physician, rehab team and lawyer can all use it.

Then straight into therapy

Assessment and treatment happen in the same practice, so you are not starting again with someone new or retelling the whole story twice.

Where your claim is open, the assessment and the treatment that follows can be submitted to your insurer through HCAI. If your claim is closed, assessment can be paid privately or through extended health benefits, with the report and receipts provided. Assessment is a newly added service, so ask us about current availability on the free call.

Want the call to start where you are?

Two minutes, and optional. Your answers come through with your request, or skip straight to booking.

Common questions

I have never been in an accident. Is this still for me? +
Yes. Plenty of people develop anxiety about driving without ever having a collision. It can start with a panic attack in traffic, a near miss, a long break from driving, getting a licence later in life, or general anxiety that settles on the road. You do not need a crash, a diagnosis, or a referral to reach out.
Will I have to drive during a session? +
No. Sessions happen in the office, online, or at your home. Any practice on the road happens between sessions, in steps you choose and feel ready for. Nobody is going to put you on the highway before you are prepared for it.
My fear started after a car accident. Does that change things? +
It is one of the most common reasons people reach out to us. When the fear traces back to a crash, we use EMDR, grounding work, and trauma-informed therapy to help that memory settle, alongside a gradual return to driving. Melissa is also trained in the Flash Technique, an EMDRIA-approved addition to EMDR that lowers the intensity of the accident memory before we process it, without you having to relive or retell it. If the accident was recent, we can also work alongside your medical and rehab team.
Will I have to relive the accident? +
No. EMDR works with the memory rather than a blow-by-blow retelling, and Melissa is also trained in the Flash Technique, an EMDRIA-approved addition to EMDR. It lowers the intensity of the crash memory first, while your attention stays on something pleasant and you only glance at the memory for a moment. The reprocessing that follows is gentler, and you stay in control of what you say out loud.
What if I cannot get myself to appointments? +
That is a very common barrier with driving anxiety, and it is exactly why we offer three ways to meet: in person at our North York office near Leslie and Sheppard, securely online anywhere in Ontario, or at your home as an accessibility option with a flat travel fee added.
How long does this usually take? +
It depends on how long the fear has been there and what is underneath it, so we will not pretend there is a set number of sessions. What we can say is that we review progress with you as we go, and you decide the pace throughout.
What does it cost, and does insurance help? +
The 15-minute consultation is free. Sessions are often covered by extended health benefits. We provide a detailed receipt after every session for you to submit to your plan for reimbursement. If your driving anxiety followed a motor vehicle accident and your accident benefits claim is open, we can bill your insurer directly through HCAI for approved assessment and treatment, so there is nothing for you to pay up front.
