Understanding it

Trauma, big-T and small-t

Everyone experiences trauma. We tend to picture the "big-T" events, an accident, an assault, a sudden loss, but so much of what weighs on us is "small-t" trauma: the quieter, accumulated hurts, the times we felt unsafe, unseen, or not quite enough. When those hurts stretch back to childhood trauma or repeat over years, they can settle into Complex PTSD (C-PTSD). Both kinds can leave a real imprint on the nervous system.

Safety first, always

We build steadiness before we ever touch anything painful.

EMDR-informed

A recognized, evidence-based approach for trauma and PTSD.

Never rushed

You set the pace; nothing happens before you are ready.

The past kept feeling present

When something overwhelms our capacity to cope, the brain can store the memory in a raw, unprocessed form. Trauma therapy helps your system finally complete that processing, so the memory loses its charge and stops hijacking the present.

How we work

How EMDR and trauma therapy work

Trauma work is never rushed. We always begin with safety and resourcing, long before we touch anything hard.

You might recognize this

What trauma can look like

Trauma does not always look like you would expect. If some of this resonates, it is worth reaching out. You do not need to know whether it "counts."

You might notice

The past intruding when you least expect it. Feeling on guard, easily startled, or numb. Nightmares or trouble sleeping. Moving on in your head but not your body.

It can also show up as

Anxiety, panic, or a short fuse. Feeling disconnected or far away (dissociation). Avoiding people, places, or reminders. Shame, or a sense of being "too much" or "not enough."

Whether your trauma is a single event or a lifetime of smaller wounds, both are valid and both can be worked with.

Our approach

Grounded, paced, led by your sense of safety

We begin by building safety and steadiness, resources you can rely on inside and outside of session, long before we approach anything painful. Nothing happens until you feel ready. When the time is right, EMDR and somatic work help your brain reprocess what it has been holding, so the memory loses its charge and stops intruding on the present. Throughout, your sense of safety leads, and we move only at the speed your system can trust.

Common questions

Trauma and EMDR questions

What is EMDR therapy and how does it help?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a structured, evidence-based therapy that can be remarkably effective at helping you let go of old memories and incidents that still feel distressing whenever they come to mind. Using gentle bilateral stimulation (such as guided side-to-side eye movements) while you briefly hold a memory in mind, EMDR helps your brain reprocess it so it loses its charge, the memory stays, but the distress around it softens. It is widely recognized for treating PTSD.
What is the difference between "big-T" and "small-t" trauma?
"Big-T" trauma refers to major events like an accident, assault, or sudden loss. "Small-t" trauma refers to the quieter, accumulated experiences, times we felt unsafe, unseen, criticized, or not enough. Both can leave a real imprint on the nervous system, and both are valid reasons to seek support. You do not have to decide whether your experience "counts."
Is EMDR safe? Will I have to relive my trauma?
EMDR is gentle and paced, and we never rush it. We spend significant time building safety and grounding skills before any reprocessing begins, and you stay in control throughout. You do not have to describe your trauma in detail or "relive" it, EMDR works with the memory without requiring you to narrate every part.
Do you offer trauma therapy and EMDR online in Ontario?
Yes. You can have trauma therapy and EMDR both in person in North York and online by secure video across Ontario. EMDR adapts well to online delivery, and many clients appreciate doing this work from a space where they already feel safe.
How long does trauma therapy take?
It varies with the type of trauma and your history. Single-incident trauma can sometimes resolve relatively quickly, while complex or developmental trauma is a longer, gentler process. We move at the pace your nervous system can trust, and we check in often on how it is going.
I was in a car accident, is this covered?
Depending on your situation, there may be coverage available, many extended health plans include psychotherapy. We offer direct billing to many extended health insurers, and for any plan we cannot bill directly, we provide receipts you can submit for reimbursement. Bring your questions to the free call and we will work out what applies to you, so the focus can stay on you, not paperwork.
Is trauma therapy covered by insurance?
Sessions with a Registered Psychotherapist may be covered under extended health plans that include psychotherapy. We offer direct billing to many extended health insurers, and for any plan we cannot bill directly, we provide receipts you can submit for reimbursement. Coverage varies, so confirm with your provider, and ask us if you are unsure.
