Understanding it

Depression, up close

Depression is not laziness or a lack of willpower, it is a real shift in how your mind and body work. It often shows up as a flatness or heaviness that drains the colour from things you used to enjoy, slows your thinking, and quietly convinces you that this is just how things are now.

Paced and gentle

When you are depleted, "try harder" is the last thing you need. We meet your energy rather than adding to your load.

Compassion-focused

For some, depression arrives after a clear trigger, a loss, burnout, a hard season; for others it settles in without an obvious cause. Either way, it is not a character flaw, and it is not your fault.

Small, real steps

Sustainable footing, not a performance of being okay. We rebuild momentum bit by bit, without force.

Care, not pressure

Depression responds to care, not pressure. We do not push you to "snap out of it"; we help you find your way back to yourself.

How we work

How we work with depression

Small, sustainable steps back toward yourself, never a to-do list you have to perform.

Protecting rest and capacity

We start by easing the load and protecting recovery, because you cannot heal depletion by depleting yourself further.

Behavioural activation

Gently, in tiny doses, reconnecting with the things that bring meaning and energy, rebuilding momentum without force.

Compassion-focused work

Softening the harsh inner voice that calls you lazy or weak, and learning to treat yourself the way you would treat someone you love.

Making sense of it

Understanding what drained you, the patterns, pressures, and beliefs underneath, so the exhaustion has somewhere to go.

Wondering if depression therapy is the right fit?

That is exactly what the free 15-minute consultation is for. No pressure, no commitment.

Our approach

Care, not pressure

When you are this depleted, "try harder" is exactly the wrong prescription. We start small, protecting rest, easing the load, and reconnecting you with a few things that matter, and tend to the exhaustion underneath rather than papering over it. As capacity slowly returns, we make sense of what drained you in the first place, and soften the inner critic that has been running the show. The goal is sustainable footing and a real sense of yourself, not a convincing performance of being okay.

Common questions

Depression questions

A few of the things people ask before booking. Anything else, just ask on your free call.

What is the difference between burnout and depression?
Burnout is typically tied to chronic stress, often work or caregiving, and tends to ease when the stressor lifts and you recover. Depression is broader, can appear without an obvious external cause, and affects mood, motivation, and enjoyment across all of life. They often overlap, and untreated burnout can slide into depression. In therapy we do not need a perfect label to start helping.
Do you offer depression therapy online in Ontario?
Yes. We work with clients in person in North York and online by secure video across Ontario. When everything already feels like too much, being able to attend from home, no commute, no extra effort, is often exactly what makes starting possible.
I have no energy for therapy. Will it just feel like more work?
No. When you are depressed, the last thing you need is another demand. We go gently and start small, there is no homework you have to perform, and we work at a pace that meets your energy rather than adding to your load. The pace is yours.
How long does therapy for depression take?
It varies with how heavy things are and what is underneath. Some people feel meaningful relief within a number of sessions as the low mood begins to lift; deeper recovery and preventing relapse can take longer. We will move at a sustainable pace and check in on what is helping.
Should I consider medication too?
That is a decision for you and a physician. Therapy and medication are not mutually exclusive, many people benefit from both. You will have support whatever you choose, and there is no pressure in either direction.
Is therapy for depression covered by insurance, and do you offer direct billing?
Sessions with a Registered Psychotherapist may be covered under extended health plans that include psychotherapy. We offer direct billing to many extended health insurers, and for any plan we cannot bill directly, we provide receipts you can submit for reimbursement. Coverage varies, so confirm with your provider.
What if I am in crisis?
If you are having thoughts of harming yourself or not wanting to be here, please reach out immediately, call or text 988 (Suicide Crisis Helpline), or call 911, or go to your nearest emergency room. Therapy is a support, but in an emergency these services come first.
