When a past experience keeps intruding on the present, EMDR helps your brain reprocess it so it loses its charge. We offer EMDR for adults across Toronto, in person near Leslie and Sheppard or online anywhere in the city.
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a structured, evidence-based therapy that helps the brain do what it could not finish at the time: fully process a distressing memory so it stops feeling raw and present.
When something overwhelms us, the memory can get stored in an unprocessed form, which is why it intrudes later as flashbacks, a racing heart, or a sudden wave of emotion. Using gentle back-and-forth (bilateral) stimulation while you briefly hold the memory in mind, EMDR helps your system reprocess it and file it away as something that is truly over.
You do not have to relive the event in detail or talk through every part of it for EMDR to work.
Paced, structured, and led by your sense of safety, never rushed.
We start by understanding your history and building grounding and coping tools, so you have a steady base before any reprocessing begins.
While you briefly bring a target memory to mind, we use gentle bilateral stimulation to help your brain process it, so the charge it carries can settle.
Trauma lives in the body, not just the story. As the memory reprocesses, the physical tension and alarm that came with it tend to ease too.
You stay in control the whole way. We move only as fast as your system can handle and pause whenever you need to.
EMDR is best known for trauma, but it reaches further than that.
If you are not sure whether EMDR is the right fit, that is exactly what a free consultation is for.

It varies. A single, recent event can sometimes resolve in a handful of sessions, while complex or layered trauma takes longer. We start with preparation, go at a pace your system can handle, and check in regularly on what is shifting.
