Perfectionism, people-pleasing & self-worth · Online across Ontario & North York

Holding it all together, and quietly running on empty.

Therapy for the people who look like they are coping. The high standards, the yes when you mean no, the replaying of conversations, and the sense that you are only as good as your last effort.

What it tends to look like

Perfectionism and people-pleasing rarely look like a problem from the outside. They look like competence. Underneath, they are often the same thing: a long-standing belief that being loved or safe depends on getting it right for everyone else.

Never quite enough

The bar moves every time you reach it. Praise slides off, mistakes stick, and rest feels like something you have to earn.

Saying yes when you mean no

You know your limits. Saying them out loud feels dangerous, so you over-give, over-explain, and resent it quietly.

Replaying and rehearsing

Conversations get run back for days. Emails are rewritten five times. A neutral face on someone else reads as disappointment.

The inner critic

A voice that is harsher than you would ever be to a friend, and that you have come to mistake for motivation.

Exhaustion that looks like success

You are the reliable one at work and at home, and nobody, including you, notices what it costs.

Where it comes from

Often it started early, in a home or a relationship where being easy, good, or useful was the safest thing to be.

Who this is for

Adults and teens who are tired of managing everyone else's comfort, and who suspect the high standards were never really about the work.

The high achiever who cannot switch off

Doing well and feeling well have come apart. You would like to keep the drive without the dread.

The peacekeeper

You read every room and smooth every edge. You are not sure what you actually want any more.

Relationships where you are always the fixer

Friendships and partnerships where you give more than you get, and struggle to ask for anything back. See also couples therapy.

When it has become burnout or anxiety

Often the pattern shows up first as burnout or anxiety. We work with the pattern underneath, not just the symptom.

You do not have to earn the right to rest

That is what the free 15-minute consultation is for.

How we would work together

Not by telling you to lower your standards or "just say no". We get curious about the parts of you that learned to be perfect and pleasing, what they are protecting, and what becomes possible when they can stand down.

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

Meeting the critic, the pleaser, and the exhausted part underneath them with curiosity rather than judgment, and helping them trust you to lead. About IFS

Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

Slowing down to the feelings underneath the performance, and the needs you have learned to keep quiet. About EFT

Compassion-focused and practical tools

Softening the inner critic, and practising limits, asking, and resting in real situations, at a pace that does not set off the alarm. About CFT

Common questions

Is this really something for therapy?+
Yes. Perfectionism and people-pleasing are among the most common reasons people come to therapy, even if they rarely say so in the first email. If it is costing you rest, honesty, or relationships, it is worth bringing.
Will I lose my drive?+
That is a common worry, and a fair one. The aim is not to make you care less. It is to separate the part of you that wants to do good work from the part that is terrified of getting it wrong. Most people find the first gets clearer once the second can rest.
How soon can I be seen?+
Often within the same week. The free 15-minute consultation can usually be booked for the next day or two, and you can see live times before you commit.
Is it online or in person?+
Both. Yasaman and Kate work online across Ontario. Other therapists on the team also see clients in person at the North York office near Leslie and Sheppard.
What does it cost?+
The 15-minute consultation is free. Individual sessions are $170 for 50 minutes. Direct billing is available with select therapists through TELUS Health eClaims. Ask at your consultation.
