Depression in the city

Depression support for Toronto adults

A big city can be a lonely place to feel low. Toronto is full of people, yet depression has a way of pulling you out of all of it, until a crowded train or a busy street can feel as isolating as an empty room. Long work weeks, the cost of living, dark winters and the quiet pressure to look like you are coping can all weigh on a mood that is already heavy.

For students and professionals

Whether you are studying downtown or carrying a demanding North York job, depression can sit quietly underneath a life that looks fine from the outside.

For the isolation

Depression can shrink your world until reaching out feels like too much. We make that first step small, warm and easy to take.

In person or online

Meet at our North York office near Leslie subway, an easy trip from across the city, or by secure video from wherever you are.

We see adults from across the city, from downtown and midtown to North York, Scarborough, Etobicoke and the east end, and online right across Ontario. Therapy cannot change the weather or the rent, but it can help you understand what is keeping the heaviness in place, reconnect with what matters to you, and slowly find your footing again.

You are not imagining it

What depression can look like

Depression is not always tears and sadness. Often it is a slow flattening, a sense that the colour has drained out of things. You might recognise some of these.

Low mood and numbness

A persistent heaviness or a flat, empty feeling, where even sadness can seem out of reach and most of the day feels grey.

Loss of interest

The hobbies, people and plans that used to light you up feel like effort, or simply do not pull at you the way they once did.

Fatigue and sleep changes

Exhaustion that rest does not fix, sleeping far too much or far too little, and an appetite that has swung up or down without warning.

Hopelessness and hard focus

A sense that nothing will change, harsh thoughts about yourself, and a mind that struggles to concentrate, decide or remember.

You do not need to be at rock bottom, and you do not need a formal diagnosis, to deserve support. If some of this sounds familiar, that is reason enough to reach out. We will meet you exactly where you are.

How we work with depression

Evidence-based, paced for a low week

There is no single fix for depression, so we draw on several proven approaches and shape the work around you and your energy.

Is this you?

The adults we work with

Wherever you are in the city, and whether your depression is loud or quietly running under everything.

High-functioning, quietly struggling

Holding it together at work and on paper, while underneath you feel flat, exhausted and disconnected from your own life.

Students and young adults

Carrying low mood, loneliness and pressure while studying or starting out in a big, expensive and fast-moving city.

Burnt out and depleted

When long-running stress and overwork have tipped into numbness, cynicism and a tank that no weekend can refill.

After a hard life chapter

Depression that has settled in after a loss, a breakup, a move, an illness or a season that took more than you had to give.

The harsh inner critic

Living with a voice that calls you lazy or not enough, where rest feels undeserved and nothing you do quite measures up.

Tired of just getting by

You have been coping for a long time and want more than surviving the week. You are ready to feel something other than flat.

Common questions

Depression therapy questions

Do you offer depression therapy online?
Yes. We offer secure online depression therapy anywhere in Toronto and across Ontario, so you can meet by video from downtown, midtown, North York, Scarborough, Etobicoke or the east end. When depression makes it hard to leave the house, online sessions remove the commute and let the work come to you. We also see adults in person at our North York office.
Is therapy or medication better for depression?
Both can help, and many people do well with one, the other, or both together. Therapy works on the thoughts, habits and life patterns that keep depression in place, while medication can lift the floor enough to make that work possible. We do not prescribe medication, but we are glad to work alongside your family doctor or psychiatrist so the two parts of your care support each other.
Do you direct bill insurance?
Sessions with a Registered Psychotherapist may be covered under extended health plans that include psychotherapy. We offer direct billing to many extended health insurers, and for any plan we cannot bill directly, we provide receipts you can submit for reimbursement. Coverage varies by plan, so it is worth confirming with your provider.
How long does therapy take?
It depends on you, what you are carrying, and what you want from the work. Some people feel steadier within a few months of focused weekly sessions, while others stay longer to work on deeper patterns. We check in regularly so the length of therapy is something we decide together, never something open-ended you cannot see the end of.
Where is your office?
Our office is at 1100 Sheppard Avenue East, Unit 407, in North York, near Leslie and Sheppard. There is free parking on site and it is a short walk from Leslie subway station, with quick access from the DVP and the 401, so it is an easy trip from downtown, midtown, Scarborough, Etobicoke and the east end.
Do I need a diagnosis to start depression therapy?
No. You do not need a formal depression diagnosis to begin. If low mood, numbness or a lasting heaviness is affecting your life in Toronto, that is reason enough to start. We meet you where you are, diagnosed or not.
