Our approach

Narrative therapy, you are not the problem.

An open book with its pages fanned out in warm light

Narrative therapy separates you from the problem, looks at the stories you have been handed about who you are, and helps you author ones that fit your life and values better.

A method tailored to you, never one-size-fits-all.

In plain language

What narrative therapy is

Narrative therapy starts from a simple idea: the problem is the problem, the person is not. Over time, hard experiences get told as stories about who we are, “I am the anxious one”, “I always fail”, and those stories start to decide what we notice and what we dare to try.

Together we look at where a story came from and whose voice it carries: family, culture, migration, school, a difficult relationship. We also look at what it leaves out, because the moments that do not fit the story are usually where your strengths and values have been hiding.

It is a respectful, collaborative way of working. You are the expert on your own life, and the therapist’s job is to ask good questions.

The problem is separate from you

You are a person dealing with a problem, not a problem to be fixed.

Stories can be re-authored

The account you were handed is not the only one available.

You are the expert

Your knowledge of your own life leads the work.

In our work together

How we use it

What we work on is yours to name. Here is how it tends to show up in sessions, woven in with whatever else fits you.

Naming the problem

We give the problem a name of its own, so you can look at it from the outside rather than from inside it.

Tracing where the story came from

We ask whose voice the story carries and what it has cost you, without blame.

Finding the exceptions

We look for the times the problem had less pull, and what you were doing differently in them.

Building the preferred story

We strengthen the account that fits your values, sometimes drawing in the people who know you at your best.

Is it a fit?

Where it can help

If some of this resonates, it may be part of how we work, always at your pace.

Especially helpful when

You feel defined by a label or a diagnosis, you carry shame or self-blame, you are living between cultures or expectations, or a big change has left you unsure who you are now.

It can help you

See yourself as more than the problem, loosen the grip of stories you did not choose, reconnect with your strengths and values, and make choices from a fuller picture of who you are.

A little more about narrative therapy

A few of the things people ask about this approach. Anything else, just ask on your free call.

What is narrative therapy?
Narrative therapy is a collaborative approach that treats the problem as separate from the person. It looks at the stories you have come to tell about yourself, where they came from, and what they leave out, and helps you build an account of your life that fits your values and strengths better.
Does that mean my problems are just a story?
No. What you are dealing with is real. Narrative therapy does not deny the problem; it questions the conclusions the problem has drawn about you, such as that you are weak, broken or to blame.
Who is narrative therapy a good fit for?
It can be especially helpful when you feel defined by a label or a diagnosis, carry shame or self-blame, live between cultures or family expectations, or are going through a change that has shaken your sense of who you are. It works well with children and teens as well as adults.
Is narrative therapy the only approach you use?
No single method fits everyone. Most of our work blends a few evidence-informed approaches, such as narrative therapy, CBT, ACT and solution-focused work, tailored to your goals and always moving at your pace.
